Indie media takes three big hits

“Far from changing our editorial approach, our culture, or our mission, this moment will be, for HuffPost, like stepping off a fast-moving train and onto a supersonic jet.”

So said Arianna Huffington about her website’s sale to AOL on Feb. 7, 2011.

Only time and the reporting of news will tell. But I can’t help but feel a little sad by the news that Arianna sold HuffPo to AOL for over 300 mill. Although I’m not mad at her –she walks away with millions in cash and as she has proven many times, she is an innovator. She can walk away and plant a dozen other seeds. But I’m pretty skeptical of AOL and corporate media in general.

This deal comes on the heels of sad news for two Toronto independent media outlets this week.

1. CRTC’s decision to shut down community radio station, CKLN, in Toronto. 

2. CTV’s buy out of urban radio station, FLOW 

Media consolidation is scary anyway you look at it. It breaks down independent voices, it silences diversity and it prioritizes corporations over people.
